Gimp Software program is designed specifically for capturing, creating, editing, and manipulating images, photo retouching, image composition and image authoring, cropping of photos, images and graphics resizing and cropping of photos and images.

Launch your Gimp Editor and browse to bring your photo in to the image editor.

Click on the "Tools" tab and when the menu drops down choose  "Transform Tools"  then click on the "Crop" menu,  or you can click the crop tool from the icon menu.

Then click on the "Rectangle Select Tool" icon.  Place your mouse pointer where you want to start your cropping of your photo.  Pull down until you have the section of the photo that you want to keep.     You will see that you have drawn a square around the section of photo that you want.  Hit the enter button on your keyboard.  click the "File" tab and select  "Save As"  it is best to save this new cropped image with another name so you keep your original phote as is.

A "save Image" menu box will pop up. change the image name and click "Save"
A "Dave as ".jpg" menu box will pop up.  click "Save"
You can now close your Gimp GNU Editor.  Your Photo has been cropped.
